What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory disease in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) grows outside the uterus — most commonly on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis. Like the uterine lining, this misplaced tissue thickens, breaks down and bleeds with each menstrual cycle, but because it has no way to leave the body, it triggers inflammation, scarring and adhesions in the surrounding tissue. Endometriosis is currently incurable: treatment can manage pain and other symptoms, but cannot remove the disease itself. Symptoms • Severe, often debilitating pain during menstruation • Chronic pelvic pain that persists outside the menstrual cycle • Pain during or after sexual intercourse • Pain with bowel movements or urination, especially around periods • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding • Chronic fatigue, bloating and nausea • Difficulty conceiving, and complications with pregnancy and childbirth • Anxiety, depression and other mental health impacts associated with living with chronic, unexplained pain

Why PAHEWO Exists

Why PAHEWO Exists

Endometriosis affects an estimated one in ten women (and some reports one in seven) of reproductive age worldwide, yet across much of Africa the disease remains poorly understood, chronically under-diagnosed, and largely unaddressed by mainstream health systems. Women living with endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain typically face a long, isolating journey: normalised pain, delayed diagnosis, limited access to specialist gynaecological care, and almost no structured support for the psychological, nutritional, social, and economic toll the disease takes on their lives. The Pan African Holistic Endometriosis Wellness Centre has been created to close this gap. It is the first facility of its kind in Africa built specifically for women with endometriosis and pelvic pain, combining clinical care with education, mental health support, nutrition, exercise, and economic empowerment under one roof. Construction began with a prayer and blessing in May 2025, and the Centre opened its doors in June 2025.
